About Cape Girardeau's Historic Districts and Landmarks

Cape Girardeau has a number of historic districts and landmarks. Many of these properties are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The City of Cape Girardeau has its own registry for Local Historic Districts and Local Historic Landmarks. Unlike the National Register, a property that is part of a Local Historic District or Landmark designation is subject to design criteria that are intended to preserve its historic and architectural character. Alterations to the property require a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Commission. The process for designating a Local Historic District or Landmark is initiated by the property owner of group of owners. Currently, Cape Girardeau has one Local Historic District and eighteen Local Historic Landmarks.
