UPDATE: The April election has been pushed back to June 2020.
City Council seats in Wards 3, 4 and 5 are up for election in April 2020.
Potential candidates for these positions must be nominated by a petition signed by at least 50 registered voters who are eligible to vote from the Ward of the proposed candidate. Nominating petitions will be available in the City Manager/City Clerk's Office at City Hall, 401 Independence St., starting on Sept. 30.

Nominated candidates may file between Oct. 22 and Nov. 19. Both the nominating petition and the acceptance of nomination form must be returned to the City Clerk.
If more than two candidates file for any one Ward, a primary election will be held on Feb. 4, 2020, with the general election on April 7, 2020. If two or fewer candidates file for the Ward, the general election will be held April 7, 2020.
Prospective Council members must be a registered voter, must be at least 21 years old, must have been a Cape Girardeau resident for at least two years immediately prior to their election and must be a resident of their Ward for at least 90 days immediately prior to the first day a nominating petition can be filed.
Ward 3 is currently represented by Nate Thomas, who was appointed to the City Council seat in August 2019 following the resignation of Victor Gunn. The current Ward 4 council member is Robbie Guard, who has been in the position since April 2016. Ryan Essex serves as the Ward 5 council member, and has been in the position since August 2018. All three members are eligible to run for another term as a City Council member.
