Meter Change Out Program
The program to replace over 17,000 old residential and commercial water meters with new remotely-read digital units began Jan. 1, 2007 in Cape Girardeau.
Over time water meters wear out and their accuracy declines. The new meters, built by Badger, have an average life expectancy of 20 years. A meter read is automatically transmitted from the meter to a receiving antenna on the route’s vehicle as it is driven down the street. The read is then transmitted directly to a laptop and downloaded for billing. This new process has cut labor costs and will eliminate the need to estimate water usage.
Our goal of having all of the water meters changed over by the end of 2017 was met with the last meter change out in November.
