The Transportation Trust Fund (TTF) sales tax is the main funding source for road repair, major street construction and renovation, and related projects. Recent projects include Lexington Avenue, North West End, S. Sprigg Street, Perryville Road, and Cape Rock Drive (see more at cityofcape.org/streets).
TTF projects are funded on a "pay-as-you-go" basis so that no money is borrowed to fund the projects. This 0.5% sales tax (half-cent per dollar spent) spreads the cost of improvement projects to everyone who uses the streets instead of just Cape Girardeau property owners.
Voters will decide April 8, 2025 whether to extend
the Transportation Trust Fund Sales Tax, a 1/2 of one percent sales tax
that has been renewed every five years since 1995 to improve the city's
street network.

Public Process
The citizen advisory group, the Harry Rediger Transportation Trust Fund Committee, hosted several open house events and surveys in 2024. Working with staff to thoroughly review repair needs and citizen input, they ultimately recommended specific projects and a general maintenance budget that City Council adopted and has proposed to voters.
