All dogs and cats in the City of Cape Girardeau are required to be licensed. Cats or dogs over six months of age must be vaccinated for rabies issued by a licensed veterinarian before a city license tag is issued. License tags are issued by the Customer Service Office, located in City Hall, or from a Cape Girardeau licensed veterinarian. Animal license fees are as follows:

Dog/cat not spayed or neutered:  $15/animal; $5/animal if Senior Citizen
Dog/cat spayed or neutered: $3/animal; $1 if Senior Citizen
Licensed breeding kennel:  $3/animal

A new animal tag is valid from the date of purchase through April 1, and the license fee is not prorated. Animal license renewals are valid for one year, from April 1 to March 31. The animal owner is responsible for the annual renewal through the City Customer Service Office or a local veterinarian. Each licensed animal will be issued a metal tag, inscribed with the City of Cape Girardeau and the year issued. The applicant shall securely attach the tag to the animal by means of a collar or harness, and the animal must wear the tag at all times.
