Sidewalk Work Along Independence Begins April 8
Posted on 04/08/2019
Contracted sidewalk work along a portion of Independence Street in Cape Girardeau is slated to begin on Monday, April 8.

During the approximately three-month project, drivers will encounter occasional lane shifts while sidewalks are constructed. The new sidewalk will extend from the Independence/East Rodney Drive/Gordonville Road roundabout east along the south side of Independence to near the bridge over Cape LaCroix Creek, where it will connect with the Cape LaCroix Recreation Trail. The project also includes a short sidewalk connection to the existing sidewalk on the west side of East Rodney.

In addition to roadway lane shifts, a portion of the Cape LaCroix Recreation Trail will close where the new sidewalk will tie in. During the trail closure, about 50 feet of trail will be removed and replaced as the new tie in is completed.

The new sidewalk is funded through a TAP grant received by the City in December 2016 in the amount of $176,708.07, which required a 78% federal/22% city match. The sidewalk construction contract in October 2018 was awarded to Nip Kelley Equipment Co. for $121,020.45.

Development Services in October 2016 hosted an online poll to garner public input, which indicated favorable public support for a sidewalk at this location due to the frequent presence of pedestrians along the stretch of roadway.

As always, drivers are asked to use caution in the work zone. For more information, please contact City of Cape Girardeau Development Services at 573-339-6327.
