Traffic Control
The Traffic Division of Public Works promotes and maintains safe and efficient travel within the City of Cape Girardeau. Responsibilities encompass the day-to-day operation of traffic signals, street lights, and traffic signs. The Traffic Division helps to move people and goods along city roads by providing the following services: 
    - Manages traffic signals at 22 intersections
 
    -  Maintains over 7,400 traffic signs
 
    - Provides 37 flashing beacons for school zones and other designated areas
 
    - Creates signage for general use and special projects using a vinyl sign system
 
    -  Installs new signs in accordance with MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) and City Ordinances
 
    -  Provides work zone traffic control devices for public works projects
 
    - Stripes over 250 crosswalks and over 60 miles of street centerlines each year
 
    -  Paints directional pavement markings and assists with airport runway striping
 
    -  Manages the city street light program which includes 3,110 total lights
 
    - Assists with traffic control for special events
