**Effective immediately, plastic shopping bags, garbage bags and newspaper sleeves are no longer accepted in our Single Stream Recycling Program due to dramatic changes in the worldwide use of recyclable materials.  These items must be placed in your trash cart with other non-recyclable itemsnon-acceptable recyclables

Recycling

Recyclables can either be set out for curbside collection or taken to the City Recycling Center at 2007 Southern Expressway. The recycling center is a drive through building with bins for cardboard, glass and single stream (all other items).

For curbside pickup, recyclables should be placed in the dark green cart and at the curb before 6:00 AM on your recycling day.  We collect an average of 175 tons of recyclables monthly. Tours and presentations can be scheduled by calling (573) 339-6351.

Glass Recycling
glass cartGlass cannot be picked up curbside in the recycling cart due to breakage and contamination. We provide several convenient drop-off locations throughout the city to encourage recycling glass food and beverage containers.

Only glass bottles and jars are accepted at these locations. No broken glass, window panes, auto glass, or household china or glassware can be accepted. Lids, metal rings, and caps must be removed, and items should be rinsed clean. Metal lids and rings can be recycled with curbside pickup. Labels do not need to be removed.

Electronics Recycling
The City of Cape Girardeau contracts with Midwest Recycling Center (MRC) to offer electronics recycling at the Recycling Center at 2007 Southern Expressway.  Televisions and monitors are not accepted for recycling but may be taken to the transfer station for disposal.  Some acceptable items include: Speakers, VCR/DVD, printers, keyboards, power tools, computers, fax machines, laptops, hard drives, stereos, cell phones microwaves, pagers, scanners, answering machines, and radios.

Used Motor Oil and Other Acceptable Fluids
Citizens can now bring their used motor oil, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, differential oil, and kerosene oil to Public Works for reuse. The oil is accepted at 2007 Southern Expressway in the southeast corner of the Fleet Maintenance shop, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Used motor oil generated by farming operations will also be accepted; however, no business or commercially-generated oil can be accepted in accordance with Missouri Department of Natural Resources regulations and guidelines.

Oil TankPlease do not mix solvents, water, gasoline, antifreeze, or other types of oil with your used oil. A test may be performed on the oil to certify that it is acceptable. Citizens must sign a log sheet, and no contaminated oil will be accepted. The oil is used to heat the City's Fleet Maintenance area and the Recycling Processing Facility.
